Job diary 9/27-29
The pictures on this page are all captures from the roof camera. They give an idea of the sequence of job operations.

To start a new section of the wall, the excavator digs out the toe trench. Note the color of the dirt on top of the pile in the second pic above - it's stream-bottom mud.

When the toe trench segment is complete, a section of filter fabric is laid across it. The fabric comes up all the way across the work road. The excavator secures it from slipping by scattering dirt on it and then sitting on it. This causes the fabric to lose all its enthusiasm for sliding down the slope when rocks are stacked on it into the toe trench.

The first rock. The toe trench has the very largest rocks. This one weighs two tons or more.

The sun finally came out during the placement of the rest of these rocks, causing the color change.

The first pic above shows how the job stands Wednesday evening 9/27. The right picture shows the deep stream pool just south of our house, only fifty feet south of the work area. The silt control measures work. The permits and extra stream-preserving measures are worth it. This pool is 6' deep and has remained clear the entire time, despite the muddiest imaginable work going on just upstream.

Thursday morning 9/28 the job focus moves back to the south end, near the house. The intent is to finish the south end of the wall. They start by compacting a work road; the excavator is fitted with a sheepsfoot compactor instead of the bucket. In the second picture they run a line to mark the position of the wall top.

Rock placement doesn't always go smoothly. Twice rocks escape into the streambed (another E-ticket ride. Shakes the house when they land). Both times the excavator must put itself into a precarious-looking position to retrieve them. Dave, the excavator operator, doesn't like that part much.

The last few above show a particularly large escapee being grunted by hand to where it's within the excavator's reach.

All day Friday work focused on the far north end of the wall. Same sequence: excavate a work platform; dig out the toe trench; lay filter fabric; add rocks.

By friday night most of the wall was complete.

Forward to next day
